Artist Representative

Also known as Artist Agent, Music Agent, Music Manager

An artist representative, or agent, is responsible for advocating for an artist whenever they are arranging contracts, tour dates, finances, or marketing. They are the direct administrator for an artist and are the first contact with companies that are trying to work with the artist. They are expected to have great communication skills. They work as the artist’s advocate and ally in all contracts and must have a strong understanding of music business in order to best serve their clients.

Agents may perform other duties such as performance scheduling, itinerary planning, finance managing, and many other operational duties, even confirming that musicians are rested and fed before a performance. Some agents will work very closely with an artist and may sometimes be expected to travel with the artists to a performance or recording.

Artist representatives must have a strong understanding of the music industry and it is recommended they obtain a degree in business with an emphasis in music.
