An audiologist is a person who treats hearing related problems and researches ways to prevent those problems.

Audiologists are trained health care professionals who work to proactively prevent and treat issues relating to hearing, hearing loss, and balance. Their training in anatomy, physiology, acoustics, and more allow them to assist patients with hearing aids, cochlear implants, and customized hearing protection depending on their specific needs. Audiologists also perform research to develop new technologies and identification practices to deliver better treatment and further the understanding of how we hear.

Those who pursue audiology will have a strong interest in the medical sciences, the physics of sound, and helping others. Practicing audiology requires a doctor of audiology degree and additional state license. A musician’s developed sense of hearing and appreciation of its importance to artists would serve well in the pursuit of this career.
