A foley artist creates the ambient or added sounds needed for a film by taking the scene, setting, and emotional impact into consideration.

A foley artist is someone who creates the ambient and added noises within a film. This may be anything such as footsteps, doors creaking, items falling, weather - anything! They work with all kinds of films whether it be live action or animation and they use all kinds of materials available to them to create the sounds necessary. They take into consideration the setting and emotional impact that the audio needs to produce and will spend many hours recording the right sound at exactly the right moment for the film.

Most foley artists join their profession through apprenticeships with other foley artists. A degree is not required, though some foley artists believe a degree in film or theatre is helpful to understand the industry as a whole.
