Harpsichord Painter / Tuner

Also known as Harpsichord Technician

Harpsichord technicians specialize in the painting, maintenance, and repair of harpsichords.

Harpsichord technicians tune, repair, and maintain harpsichords to keep them in their best playing condition. Due to the differences in playing action (plucked strings vs. hammered) and tuning practices, technicians for the harpsichord study specifically to service its unique design. Those with a passion for harpsichord performance, Baroque music, and learning a variety of hands-on technical skills make great candidates for this career.

Unique to the harpsichord is the practice of painting the inside of the instrument’s lid. This artform dates back to the 17th century, with landscapes and natural scenes being the most common subject matter. Musicians who practice visual arts can find employment as harpsichord painters.

Harpsichord maintenance is a less common trade due to its limited performance, so most who specialize in this instrument also learn to service pianos. Many of the practices and technical skills translate well and the steady demand for piano maintenance makes for a steadier income to supplement harpsichord specialization. (See Piano Technician)
