An acoustician specializes in the physics relating to sound. Their positions often involve improving the sound environment for specific spaces by optimizing sound transmission, reflection, and absorption. This may be through architectural design or active listening and sound analysis.

As an acoustician, you may find yourself on a team planning for the acoustics of a theater or recording studio. Or, you may find yourself listening to the deep depths of the ocean, using acoustic technology to help promote marine life preservation.

Acousticians are required to have a bachelor’s in a related field and are often encouraged to obtain further degrees in fields such as Physics, Oceanography, Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Engineering, or Building Sciences. Acousticians can find jobs in many different fields including theater or building design, architectural consultation, construction, marine research, and military signal processing.
