Music Clearance Specialist

A music clearance specialist gains clearance from a copyright owner to use music in various projects such as movies or television shows.

A music clearance specialist is someone who works for a company, often a film or TV company, to coordinate clearance and usage of music within a movie or show. They communicate with copyright owners, usually record companies, about using songs and ensuring that all owners or creators involved are appropriately compensated. Music clearance specialists work closely or within the music licensing department.

A music clearance specialist must have a strong understanding of music law, licensing, and business. For this reason, they are expected to obtain a bachelor’s in a related field. This often means having a degree in music or music business with additional training in licensing.
