Music Supervisor

A music supervisor oversees and manages all steps of a music project.

A music supervisor is someone who oversees a music project. Music supervisors can be hired by producers either as a freelance contractor or through a company. They are often hired to oversee the musical aspects in a film or television show and will be the person making the final decisions on when music is needed within a production and what music is licensed. Since they are involved with licensing, they are required to have a good understanding of copyright and loyalty laws. They work directly with producers, directors, artists, composers, and sound engineers, and are expected to have great relationship building skills.

A music supervisor often starts out working in another part of the music industry. They become supervisors through active relationship building and by honing their musicianship. There is not one path to becoming a music supervisor; often music supervisors make connections with filmmakers and directors. That being said, a degree is not required but it is helpful for building musicianship skills and connecting with other upcoming artists in the industry. Apprenticeships and internships in the film industry are also helpful for creating the connections needed for this profession.
