A professor instructs college or university students and conducts research in related fields.

A professor is responsible for many different roles within a university or college setting. Their main job is to educate students about a specific subject or field. As a professor, you would have the opportunity to create your own related coursework, work with undergraduate, graduate, and/or doctoral students, and conduct your own research.

In music, there are many professor roles including professor of music theory, music history, ethnomusicology, music technology, music education, composition, and other fields. A professor can also be focused on teaching a specific instrument, much like a private instructor (see Private Teacher ) but working through an institution rather than being self-employed.

A professor is expected to have a doctorate (or terminal) degree in their field and a postdoctoral degree and research experience is often encouraged. Professors work mainly in a university or college setting, however, research may be conducted in a variety of external research settings.
