Studio Musician

Studio musicians specialize in performing within a recording studio.

Studio musicians are musicians who specialize in performing recorded music whether it be orchestral music, film music, contemporary works, or pop music. The skills required from a studio musician are different from a stage performer. A studio musician will often have their own part, recorded separately or with other musicians. They frequently sight read and play into their own microphone set up. Studio musicians must have very advanced instrument proficiency and strong sight reading skills. They must also be comfortable performing a variety of genres as they may be hired for a variety of different sessions.

Studio musicians are often hired through referral or through a union. Musicians who aspire to become studio musicians must have advanced playing abilities and be connected to a network of other professionals. Most studio musicians obtain advanced level training through a college program. Being part of a music school often expedites networking opportunities through classes and early professional experiences.
