Synthesizer Programmer

A synthesizer programmer is someone who is hired to program a synthesizer with the unique sounds needed for a particular performance. Synth programmers need to have substantial knowledge about the software and hardware of various synthesizers. Additionally, they need collaborative skills to work with an artist or studio to ensure they are creating the desired sounds for a performance or recording.

Synth programmers may choose to keep a sample library that they can pull from for their work. Programmers may be hired only to program a musician's synthesizer, or they may be expected to repair synthesizers and to perform. They often work as freelancers, though they may be connected to a specific studio or ensemble, especially if they also perform.

Synth programmers are recommended to have a degree in audio engineering as well as training in how to repair synths. Those who plan to perform should gain substantial performance experience through gigging, performance training, or through a performance degree.
